The Early Ranks (Novice - Recruit)

Novice

Hello! Welcome to MouseHunt, a game where patience and strategy is everything! MouseHunt is a passive game where you sound the horn periodically to catch various breeds of mice and complete quests and adventures!

First, let's look at the trap options that are available when you start the game:

High Tension Spring Trap

75 power, 5% power bonus, 20% attraction bonus, 2 luck, no cheese effect

A fairly straightforward trap for new hunters.

Tacky Glue Trap

70 power, 0% power bonus, 40% attraction bonus, 2 luck, stale cheese effect

A very interesting looking trap with the highest attraction bonus in the game.

Mouse Hot Tub

70 power, 3% power bonus, 35% attraction bonus, 2 luck, no cheese effect

The alternative to the Tacky Glue Trap if you started playing the game on the mobile app.

On first look, it may seem like a good idea to pick the high tension spring trap for the greater power bonus. However, in the early stages of the game, attraction and luck matter much more than raw power (I'll explain this in a while). Go for the tacky glue or the mouse hot tub (if you're playing on mobile), any additional power that the high tension provides at this stage is not a significant difference anyway. To the meadow!

At this point, Larry the Friendly Knight will guide you on the mechanics of a hunt. Just follow the instructions and you'll catch your first few mice! After the first 3 hunts, you will be introduced to the cheese shoppe to restock your cheese. Stick to cheddar for now. You will not be using swiss or brie anytime soon for the simple purpose of maximising your profits. You may use marble but at this stage, every little bit of cost saving goes a long way.

So, stock up on your cheddar cheese, sound the horn, wait, and then sound the horn again! Yes, it seems quite repetitive now but trust me, it gets more exciting when you rank up!

New Bases

When you have collected around 2,000 gold or so, you have the option of buying the wooden base with target:

Wooden Base with Target

75 power, 0% power bonus, 20% attraction bonus, 0 luck, no cheese effect

Cost: 1,225 gold / Point Requirement: 650 points

The base with the highest attraction in the game (less the cheesecake base). Switching the wooden base with this will add 35 raw power and a sweet 20% attraction bonus to your setup. If you're using the tacky glue, this base will send your attraction bonus soaring to 60%, which is insane!

Now wait just a minute! If you 'like' the MouseHunt Facebook Page, you'll be able to claim this free base:

Fan Base

175 power, 12% power bonus, 0% attraction bonus, 2 luck, very fresh cheese effect

Very nice base to have at the initial stage. The stats of this base makes the stone base obsolete, which will save you some gold along the way!

So which base should you use?

Well, honestly, you are free to use whichever base you see fit. For me, I'd go with the wooden base with target for now simply because the additional power is not a necessity at this point as most of the mice are rather easy to catch. What you DO need, however, is the attraction bonus to make up for using a low attraction cheese such as cheddar or marble. Being able to attract more mice equates to more successful hunts over time and therefore, faster progression!

Just keep on sounding the horn and you'll reach the rank of Recruit in no time!

Recruit

Congratulations on your first title! As a recruit, you may now hunt in the Town of Gnawnia! Travel there as directed.

At this point, there are some horn mechanics to take note of:

  • Your horn timer is currently set to below 15 minutes so as to allow for faster progression initially. It will gradually increase so eventually you may only sound the horn once every 15 minutes.
  • Hourly trap checks: These are free horns that occur once every hour. However, they last for only up to 24 hours from your last active moment in the game - this means that each time you log in, you get one automatic hunt per hour for the next 24 hours. Do note that this can only occur when you have a bait, though.
  • Friend's horns: If you've started the game via Facebook or linked your MouseHunt game account to your Facebook account, your friends will be able to sound the horn for you and vice versa, if: 1) the both of you are in the same location; 2) both your horns are ready. This can only take place for an hour since your last active moment, though

Also, here's some information on hunting information (good to read and familiarise yourself with them).

General

Gold: The in-game currency, that is used to buy weapons, bases, cheese and crafting materials. You may get gold from catching mice, completing adventures/quests and from daily rewards (logging in everyday).

Points: Your points reflect your experience as a hunter. Generally, your points correlate to your title, and also determines which weapons/bases you may equip. A higher level weapon is likely to have a higher point requirement.

Title: Your rank as a hunter. The higher your title, the more locations that are available for you to hunt in!

Hunter's Journal: This is where your mice catches are recorded. You are also able to see details of your travels, recent hunting stats, crafting actions and adventure completions here.

Trap Set-up Mechanics:

Power: Power is a measure of the strength of your trap. Generally, the higher the power, the more likely you are to catch a mouse

Power Type: As the game progresses, you will encounter mice of various power types. You will also have access to traps of various power types to catch these mice. For now, the only power type you'll encounter is physical.

Power Bonus: Extra boost to your trap set-up's power

Attraction Bonus: Extra boost to your trap set-up's attraction, on top of the attraction rate of the cheese you are using

Luck: Luck increases your chance of catching mice, as well as finding loot.

Cheese Effect: A fresher set-up will reduce the chance of a piece of cheese going stale should it fail to attract a mouse.

Charm: Trinkets that improve your trap set-up or help with attracting certain mice. More on this later on.

Bait: The type of cheese you are using. There are many kinds of cheese but for now, you have access to mainly standard cheese: cheddar, marble, swiss and brie.

Power & Luck

As you may have noticed, both power and luck helps in improving the catch rate of mice. So what's the difference?

In general, luck seems to be the greater factor when it comes to improving catch rate. Keep this in mind when choosing to upgrade your traps in the future. However, this general rule is true largely for weaker mice - when it comes to going after stronger mice or boss mice (as you will encounter in the future), power matters more than luck. But for now, a luckier set-up is what we want to go for.

Shops

Cheese Shoppe: Where you purchase cheese for your bait.

Trapsmith: Where you purchase weapons, bases and trap skins.

Charm Shoppe: Where you purchase charms and materials to craft charms. More on this later on.

General Store: Where you purchase crafting materials and other supplies.

Cartographer: Where you fix maps or unlock new areas. More on this later on.

Marketplace: Where you buy and sell various supplies and loot with other hunters.

So what now? Time to get a new trap, of course!

Head to the trapsmith. You'll notice a whole variety of new traps. Let's focus on a few for now:

500 Pound Spiked Crusher

250 power, 10% power bonus, 0% attraction bonus, 1 luck, no cheese effect

Cost: 3,450 gold / Point Requirement: 2,100 points

This trap looks pretty neat but you should not get this trap over the next one.

Mouse Mary O'Nette

250 power, 0% power bonus, 6% attraction bonus, 5 luck, fresh cheese effect

Cost: 3,450 gold / Point Requirement: 2,100 points

A good trap to get over the spiked crusher due to its much higher luck rating.

Both of these traps should be affordable and available to you at this juncture. You can get the mouse mary o'nette if you'd like. My advice, however, would be to save up for the mouse trebuchet below:

Mouse Trebuchet

600 power, 2% power bonus, 4% attraction bonus, 1 luck, very fresh cheese effect

Cost: 15,850 gold / Point Requirement: 11,000 points

This trap is an absolute necessity and will serve you well until you get the swiss army mouse trap.

Mouse Rocketine

650 power, 6% power bonus, 0% attraction bonus, 0 luck, extremely stale cheese effect

Cost: 18,700 gold / Point Requirement: 11,000 points

A strong trap on paper, but you'll appreciate the attraction bonus and extra luck from the trebuchet. Do not get this over the trebuchet.

If you're currently short of a little gold to get the mouse trebuchet, arm cheddar with your current trap and hang with it for a while. (Trust me, the tacky glue/hot tub still performs decently in the Town of Gnawnia) You'll be able to get the gold needed in no time. Some of the mice back in the meadow even drop satchels of gold, which will help quite a bit. Feel free to return to the meadow if the town gets a little rough. Once you have your mouse trebuchet, let's go bounty hunting!

Note: Never buy a trap until you have some spare gold on top of the trap cost. This means that if I were to purchase the mouse trebuchet that costs 15,850 gold, I will not purchase it when I get 15,850 gold but rather perhaps at 17,000 gold. This is so that you'll have some gold leftover to purchase cheese. Keep this in mind for future purchases - financial management in MouseHunt is important!

Adventure Book: Town of Gnawnia Bounty

Located above your hunter's journal, you will find a banner that says "Adventure Book". As you progress through the game, there will be various adventures released when you reach a new title. These adventures are often in line with your progression goals (meaning, they are the to-dos at each title) and give points, gold and sometimes king's credits for their completion! Awesome! For the title of recruit, you have access to 1 new adventure: To capture the bounty mice.

At this point, you'll notice a "bounty" tab/button on your HUD (Heads Up Display). Click it, and it will reveal a bounty. Catch the mouse that is revealed and you'll be able to claim your bounty.

List of mice to catch and their respective rewards:

1) Cowardly Mouse - 250 gold
2) Dwarf Mouse - 500 gold
3) Longtail Mouse - 800 gold
4) Pugilist Mouse - 1,000 gold
5) Flying Mouse - 1,500 gold
6) Speedy Mouse - 1,500 gold

The task is not very difficult, except it has to be mentioned that the flying and speedy mouse are super brie (SB+) preferring mice. Super brie is the premium cheese in the game and offer a 99% attraction rate for mice that are attracted to standard cheese. It can be obtained via daily loyalty chest rewards, loot drops from certain mice, bought on the marketplace and bought by donating real money to the game. However, at this point, SB+ is not a luxury that we can afford (unless you are willing to pay for it). While the flying and speedy mouse are SB+ preferring mice, this does not mean they are attracted to SB+ exclusively. You CAN still attract them using standard cheese, though using brie will be more effective than the others. The use of brie here to complete the adventure is okay. Otherwise, you should be using cheddar or marble.

Summary:

  • Obtain Mouse Trebuchet Trap
  • Stick to Cheddar or Marble (Use Brie only to catch Flying and Speedy Mouse)
  • Catch mice on bounty list and claim rewards

Getting the hang of things? Good!

Once you're done with the bounty hunting, just keep on catching mice and saving gold until you reach the title of Apprentice!
