Calm Clearing

Journeyman

Congratulations on making it to Journeyman! How's the hunt been so far? Well, things are going to be a lot more interesting from here on, so brace yourself!

With the title of Journeyman, you may now hunt in 2 new areas: the Calm Clearing and the Mountain. Also, you are now able to craft items! For now, you only have 3 crafting slots (that will increase you you attain higher ranks) but 3 is good enough for now.

The next question: Where do I hunt first?

To be honest, it doesn't matter so much where you choose to hunt next. While clearing the mountain is a priority for advancing to the next phase of the game, the calm clearing offers us a better loot rate for splintered wood, which we will need for crafting a new base (that will help with catching mice in the mountain too). For the sake of efficiency, this guide will cover the calm clearing first.

Exploring Whisker Woods

You may have noticed that the Calm Clearing is classified under the "Whisker Woods" region in the map. Finally! We're taking a break from the Gnawnia region for now! As you progress in the game, there will be a variety of regions available to you, it's all part of the game!

Stock up as much swiss cheese as possible (yes, we will be using swiss from here on) from the meadow and head over to the Calm Clearing!

Got your swiss army and fan base? Got your swiss cheese? Great, sound the horn! You'll be catching some really interesting mice that are probably new to you. They're part of the "Forest Guild" group under the "Mice" tab. So far, they should be relatively easy to catch. This is where it gets interesting: If you look at the mice information, you'll see that the mice here are weaker to tactical traps, and physical traps are of normal effectiveness. This means to say that your physical trap will still work normally here, but if you really want to boost your catch rate, a tactical trap is necessary.

Eh, a tactical trap, you say? Where can I get that? Well, you'll be able to purchase your first tactical trap from the next location in the Whisker Woods region. You'll need the title of Master, unfortunately. Not to worry, your swiss army mouse trap will suffice for now!

You have two main goals in the Calm Clearing:

1) Gather splintered wood to craft the dehydration base.

You'll want to collect 4 of these. Splintered wood may be dropped by Dwarf mice in the Mountain but here in the Calm Clearing, they can be dropped from Shaman and Treant Mice (Treant mice may drop multiple pieces of splintered wood at a time!). This task should not be too difficult. Just sound your horn every once in a while, you'll get your splintered wood in no time!

Once you are done, let's do some crafting!

Remember the dehydration base blueprints? If you didn't buy it back in the Harbour, you should return to get it now. Done? Great, click on the "Inventory" tab and go to "Crafting". Go to the crafting table and insert the following items in the crafting slots:
  • 1 dehydration base blueprints
  • 213 salt
  • 4 splintered wood
Voila! Success! You have crafted the Dehydration Base successfully! Let's a take a look at its stats:

Dehydration Base

225 power, 0% power bonus, 5% attraction bonus, 4 luck, insanely fresh cheese effect

Point Requirement: 22,500 points

A very nice, lucky base to have early in the game. The insanely fresh cheese effect will help you save a fair bit of cheese from staling as well, increasing your profits.  While not as great as the Fan Base in terms of overall effective power, the 4 luck will give your set-up more success than you'd expect when paired with luckier traps. This will be your main base of choice for quite a while! Use it and use it often.

2) Catch a Cyclops Mouse for the Great Gnarled Tree Map Piece.

The Cyclops is not commonly attracted, but he isn't difficult to catch. There's nothing much to advise other than to be patient and wait for one to come around. With the dehydration base, you should have roughly a 50% catch rate for this guy.

Once you obtain the Great Gnarled Tree Map Piece, you'll be able to see the Great Gnarled Tree location on your map. However, you can't access it until you reach the title of Master. This will complete the "Survey the Calm Clearing" on the adventure book, though.

What's next? You may have noticed that the Cyclops and Eagle Owl mice occasionally drop cherry potions as loot. Yay, your first potion! Cherry potions can be used to convert brie cheese (or SB+) into cherry cheese. Cherry cheese is necessary to attract the Cherry Mouse in the Calm Clearing, which can fetch a handsome reward (6,000 points, 3,000 gold).

However, the potion conversion rate is only 2 pieces of brie per potion (at a cost of 300 gold per piece), unless you use SB+ (8 pieces converted per potion at 0 gold per piece). Moreover, the cherry cheese does not attract the Cherry Mouse exclusively, meaning to say that you'll very likely need quite a few pieces to finally catch one. Feel free to convert your brie cheese (or SB+) to try your luck. Personally, I'd wait till a higher rank to come back for the Cherry Mouse. Why? Because as your title increases, your potion conversion rate improves as well (not to mention, you gain more crafting slots). At the Master rank, you can convert 3 pieces of brie into cherry per potion and 4 pieces at the Grandmaster rank. Having said that, there is really nothing stopping you from going for the Cherry Mouse at this stage. They drop a bunch of standard cheese as loot, as well as some greater brie potions.

Summary:
  • Collect Splintered Wood
  • Craft Dehydration Base
  • Catch Cyclops Mouse and obtain the Great Gnarled Tree Map Piece
  • Collect Cherry Potions and obtain Cherry Cheese. Catch the Cherry Mouse. (Optional)
Other than that, there's nothing else to do here so let's head to the Mountain!
